The SESC has 5 competitions throughout the year.

We have 5 competitions throughout the year for different styles of swimming: team event, sprints and long distances.

Spring 30

The Spring 30 race is usually swum in the beginning of March. It is a team event. The team consists of 6 swimmers, swimming in relay. Each swimmer swims 5 lengths in turn.

It is a fun and quick race and it creates a lot of buzz on the poolside.

Usually we swim this race in a 33 yard pool but recently we have been able to hire some lanes at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. It is a novelty and a real pleasure to swim there. From the possitive response from all the swimmers we are aiming to keep this venue for this event.

One Mile

The One Mile race is held at the Tooting Bec Lido. It is usually the first race of the summer around the 1st of July.  The Tooting Bec Lido is the longest swimming pool in Europe and for this reason this pool was selected.  (previously this race was swum in the Serpentine in Hyde Park).

For the One Mile swim, swimmers can be placed into several categories: Veterans, Championships, New Commers and Handicap. More about these categories can be found on Types of Competitions.

International Relay

This is team event. It consists of 4 swimmers swimming 4 lengths each. The competition is swum at the Tooting Bec Lido and usually mid July. It is a fun sprint race but a challenge at the same time.

Quarter Mile

This is also swum in the Tooting Bec Lido. This is a great race to start with if you are unsure about long distances.

For the One Mile swim, swimmers can be placed into several categories: Veterans, Championships, New Commers and Handicap. More about these categories can be found on

Types of Competitions.

The Gala

The Gala is challenges the sprinters and those who wish to beat their own time. The Gala is usually held in the First week of November. There are 18 events to enter which are split up into Championships, relays and handicaps. The list of races can be found here. For more information see Types of Competitions.

The Gala usually ends up with everyone going to the local pub for food sponsored by the SESC and refreshments by a sponsor.
